Playgroup

Wedderburn College run a Playgroup session every Tuesday morning, from 9.00am to 10.30am in a creative, nurturing space in the BER. We warmly welcome all families with children, ages 0-4. We facilitate a program that incorporates lots of age appropriate, engaging activities centered around language, fine and gross motor and social and emotional development (with a hint of glitter!). We have visits from the Goldfields Library who come and present a story time session twice a Term.

Playgroup is resourced by a Teacher and Education Support staff member. The playgroup not only provides an especially designed space for young mothers to meet with their young children in a safe and nurturing environment but the opportunity to encourage language development. The college has implemented a Pre-Lit program that will provide the best foundation and opportunity for young children entering formal kindergarten and schooling.

The evidenced-based program is a skills based, early literacy preparation program for preschool children. It is designed to complement the play based learning environment that has been set up in the College. The two main components of Pre-lit are Phonological Awareness and Oral language development through Structured Book Reading.

The playgroup also use the PEEP Learning Together program which is supports parents and carers to enhance the quality of the home learning environment by valuing and extending everyday learning opportunities, which contributes to school readiness, develops secure attachment relationships with their babies and children, and improves children’s communication and language, social and emotional development, early literacy and maths,  and health and physical development.
